1 on 1 with: Jim Sharp

Having served the company for nearly 20 years, ONICON Regional Sales Manager Jim Sharp oversees several territories throughout the southeastern United States. He supports a network manufacturer’s reps with product selection, pricing, technical expertise, complaint resolution, and more.

Let’s go one-on-one with Jim to learn a little more.

Q: Hi Jim. Can you provide us with a little of your personal background?

I grew up on Florida’s West Coast and have lived in the state most of my life. All of my schooling has been in Florida and all of my employers have been based here. I worked in a variety of industries prior to joining ONICON, mostly in sales and management positions. My wife is a native Floridian and we have been married for 27 years. No kids or grandchildren.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working for ONICON?

I work with a terrific group of representatives – AEB being one of the seven rep firms. Our customers are fantastic. The company has always been known for terrific customer service and support. That’s a huge factor when it comes to job satisfaction. When I am not traveling, I work from home. So, I really enjoy the independence, also.

Q: What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the industry throughout your career?

Over the years, we have seen a marked increase in the number of competitors. When I first started with the company in 2001, there were few other companies doing what we do. The increased competition has made things a bit more challenging. But, by the same token, it has kept me on my toes.

Q: OK, so let’s hear your elevator speech. What sets ONICON apart? Aside from you and your sales team of course.

Great products, the finest customer service and technical support, and the best warranty in the industry. It’s just that simple.

Q: How long have you worked with AEB and what is your experience with that company?

I have been working with Joe and John since before AEB’s inception. I have worked for 10-plus years with Joe and nearly 20 with John. They are both fantastic to work with, not just on a professional level, but personally, also.

Q: Did the recent pandemic change the way you work to any extent?

Yes, actually. Since I travel 30-40 percent of the time, the virus has put a temporary hold on that. Zoom meetings just are not the same as personal interaction with our customers and reps. I typically work 3-4 trade shows per year. Obviously, that has taken a hiatus, also. So, I am hoping to be able to get back on the road soon.

Q: What can we look forward to from ONICON in the coming year?

ONICON has a number of exciting new products in development. We have never been a company that has rushed products to market. That and getting back in front of our customers again!

Q: What are some of your interests outside of the business – what do you enjoy doing away from work?

My wife and I live on five acres in the country. So, we spend a great deal of time tending to plants, shrubs, etc.

I enjoy photography and coin collecting. I am also an avid collector of vinyl records, mostly vintage rock music.
